Video: Savage Rivale gets out of our dreams and into a car

Savage Rivale

What the world needs now is love, sweet love. That's what The Carpenters would tell you, anyway - but we beg to differ. What the world needs now, in our opinion, is four-door convertibles. Because while many have experimented with the idea in recent years, and built them many decades ago, there just aren't any on the market these days.

That's where Savage Rivale comes in. Rather than take the parade-car approach, this Dutch project is more like a four-door supercar roadster. On acid. The initial Roadyacht GTS version packs the 7.0-liter V8 from the Corvette Z06 tuned to the tune of 600 horsepower and a four-seat cabin that's more similar in approach to that of a speedboats, but is accessed by some of the most imaginative doors we've ever seen and covered by a giant retractable hard-top.

It sounds strange, we know, but it makes a lot more sense once you see the video after the jump. What makes less sense is the plans to make a GTR version limited to track use that reportedly aims to take the Nürburgring lap record for four-doors, but after first reporting on the upstart nearly three years ago, we'll wait a little while longer to see how this plays out.

Official: AOL Autos chooses first-ever Car and Truck/SUV of the Year

AOL Autos 2012 Car of the Year

AOL Autos 2012 Truck of the YearAOL Autos, sibling channel to Autoblog, has chosen a Car of the Year and Truck of the Year for the first time.

Editor-in-Chief David Kiley dubbed the awards, "Editors' Choice Awards", reflecting the fact that the selections were made by polling AOL Editors for their nominations. Their choices were discussed and consolidated with winners and three runners up per category.

Autoblog editors and staff did not participate in voting.

"Since we test just about every vehicle on the market, and certainly all the newly designed vehicles that come out, I felt like we should assert our collective opinion into the mix," said Kiley.

"This was a very good year for cars, which made it tough, but not a great year for eligible SUVs and trucks. But I feel really strongly about the choices we made; that both vehicles could win in any year," said Kiley.

Honda extends 2006-2011 Civic Hybrid warranty over gas leak

2009 honda civic hybrid

When we hear words like "gas leak," we expect to hear words like "recall" shortly thereafter. That's not the case for 80,000 Honda Civic Hybrid models from the 2006 to 2011 model years that may experience small gas leaks. The New York Times reports that Honda has instead opted to extend the warranty of those models to satiate customers who may experience the problem.

Honda spokesperson Chris Martin tells the NYT that the potential leak is located where the fuel filler meets the tank, adding that possible leaks are likely small, and they tend to appear nowhere near a likely ignition source. In the event that a leak is detected, Martin says that the fuel tank will be replaced. Owners of the models in question who smell gasoline vapors or who spot a small quantity of gas on the ground need to take the vehicle to a Honda dealership to determine if there is a gas leak. States with really hot weather are reportedly more likely to experience the leak. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration hasn't yet made any rulings regarding the fuel leak issue, but the NYT reports that the government agency is looking into the matter.

While the lack of a recall campaign may annoy some owners and safety advocates, we're guessing most owners will be thrilled with the extended warranty. Honda will cover the Civic Hybrid models in question with a 10-year/120,000 mile warranty. That's an expensive bit of coverage to give away for free, but keep in mind that a recall would likely be far more costly for the automaker. If Honda is forced to recall the models, every affected part will need to be repaired, and doing so will likely translate into quite a bit more coin than the extra coverage.

Used Ferrari 550 Maranello V12 Engine For Sale on eBay

We're pretty sure that people who are crazy enough to do an engine swap don't have the kind of money needed here, but there might be a Cleatus somewhere who's sold some land or his sister and want to do somethin' special to his truck.

Right mister Cleatus, what you have here is the 5.5-liter V12 from a 1999 Ferrari 550 Maranello, a two-door GT car from back in the day. The seller wants $16,999 plus shipping for the lump which has already done 9,000 miles. We'd suggest offering him $5,000 and ...

A Bentley for Mad Max by Office K

The thirst thing that comes to mind when seeing the adjacent image is probably a trip outside the house - you'll need some fresh air to be able to cope with this piece of overkill. However, we think we know what happened here.

This Bentley custom work coming from Japanese tuner Office K (we must thank luxury4play for the photo) isn't just another aftermarket kit destined for usual people. This has to be a proposal of a Bentley for Mad Max. If you look at it this way, things seem to make a bit...

Porsche approves development of third-generation 911 GT3 R Hybrid

Porsche has announced that it will continue development on its innovative 911 GT3 R Hybrid, delivering a new third-generation model in 2012 in an effort "...to gain extra practical experience under racing conditions and make the hybrid drive even more efficient."

The rolling race laboratory, as the automaker prefers to call it, ran the 2011 season in second-generation trim. That version used a 470 horsepower gasoline-powered 4.0-liter flat-six to drive the rear wheels and 202 horsepower worth of electric motors to drive the front wheels - with electricity generated by a 36,000 rpm flywheel mounted on the passenger side of the cabin. With a curb weight of just 2,866 pounds and total system power of 672 horsepower, the all-wheel-drive Porsche GT3 R Hybrid 2.0 accelerated to 60 mph in about 2.5 seconds.

We drove Porsche's 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0 at the famed Estoril race circuit outside of Lisbon, Portugal, just last month. Despite the second-generation model being the answer to all of our enthusiast prayers, we assume Porsche will reduce the overall weight of the system, increase the duration of the boost and reduce the deafening noise level in the cabin. There's always room for improvement.

While we don't expect the 911 GT3 R Hybrid 3.0 to be there, Porsche's factory-supported teams kick off the 2012 season in 911 GT3 Cup cars at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in late January.

Ferrari F360 Limo Is Ideal for Santa! [Video]

Ever wonder what sort of supercar Santa drives around in if the reindeers run out of juice? We do all, all the time for that matter, and we've come to the conclusion that it would have to be fast in order to span the world in a single night, and also very roomy in order to fit all those gifts, right?

For a while now, we thought the jolly one a turbocharged buss, but we found something much better - a Ferrari F360 that has been stretched to become a limo. After he's done with it for Christmas,...
